What is Overseeding?
Overseeding is the process of spreading grass seed directly into the soil of an existing lawn without tearing up the turf. This practice introduces new grass varieties into your lawn, encouraging denser growth and better coverage. Overseeding is typically done with high quality seed you don’t find at big box stores.
The Overseeding Process:
- Lawn Preparation:
- Before overseeding, it’s important to prepare the lawn to ensure proper seed-to-soil contact. This can involve mowing your grass to a shorter height, dethatching and removing debris on lawn, and aerating the soil.
- Selecting the Right Seed:
- Choosing the right grass seed for your soil, speed of establishment, and overall appearance and health is one of the most important steps. We specialize in catering specific seeds for different applications. By also using zero weed seed, less than .1% crop seed, little filler material and high germination rates, our seed is second to none.`
- Seeding:
- Once the lawn is prepped, the seeds are spread evenly across the soil using a broadcast spreader. For even distribution and better coverage, we apply the seeds in multiple directions (criss-cross pattern).
- Post-Seeding Care:
- After overseeding, it’s important to water the lawn consistently but lightly to keep the soil moist, ensuring the seeds have the best chance to germinate. Depending on the season and weather conditions, germination typically takes 7-21 days. During this time, it’s best to avoid heavy foot traffic on the lawn to allow the new grass to establish itself.
- Ongoing Lawn Maintenance:
- Once the new grass begins to grow, it’s important to continue proper lawn care practices, including regular mowing, fertilizing, and watering. As the overseeded grass matures, it will gradually blend with the existing turf, resulting in a fuller, healthier lawn.
Why Overseed Your Lawn?
Overseeding offers a range of benefits that can enhance your lawn’s health and appearance:
- Thicker Grass: Overseeding promotes denser grass growth, filling in bare patches and reducing the likelihood of weeds taking root.
- Improved Lawn Resilience: Introducing new grass varieties improves your lawn’s ability to withstand drought, pests, diseases, and environmental stress.
- Enhanced Appearance: A thicker, more uniform lawn is visually appealing and increases the curb appeal of your property.
- Reduced Maintenance: With a healthier, thicker lawn, you’ll spend less time dealing with weeds, pests, and bald spots, making your lawn easier to maintain in the long term.
- Increased Disease Resistance: By overseeding with disease-resistant grass varieties, you can improve your lawn’s ability to resist fungal infections and other common lawn diseases.
